Activity Theory in HCI: Fundamentals and Reflections
نویسندگان
چکیده
Activity theory—a conceptual framework originally developed by Aleksei Leontiev—has its roots in the socio-cultural tradition in Russian psychology. The foundational concept of the theory is human activity, which is understood as purposeful, mediated, and transformative interaction between human beings and the world. Since the early 1990s, activity theory has been a visible landmark in the theoretical landscape of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Along with some other frameworks, such as distributed cognition and phenomenology, it established itself as a leading post-cognitivist approach in HCI and interaction design. In this book we discuss the conceptual foundations of activity theory and its contribution to HCI research. After making the case for theory in HCI and briefly discussing the contribution of activity theory to the field (Chapter 1) we introduce the historical roots, main ideas, and principles of activity theory (Chapter 2). After that we present in-depth analyses of three issues which we consider of special importance to current developments in HCI and interaction design, namely: agency (Chapter 3), experience (Chapter 4), and activitycentric computing (Chapter 5). We conclude the book with reflections on challenges and prospects for further development of activity theory in HCI (Chapter 6).

The Status of Quranic and Platonic Tazzakor in “Mathnawi”
The word tazakkor (reminding) is one of key words in the holy Quran and has a long history in philosophical, ethical and Islamic mystic fundamentals. There are significant differences between the concept of tazakkor in philosophy, particularly what is derived from the theory of tazakkor or Platonic archetypes, and what is understood from the truth of tazzakor in the context of Quranic culture. ...

متن کاملSome preliminary reflections on the epistemology of Computational Theory of Perceptions
The impressive practical applications is one of the main reasons of success of Fuzzy Logic. The Computational Theory of Perceptions (CTP) is an extension of this theory that has not yet reached the same level of applicability. We believe that a review of the fundamentals of CTP from a epistemological perspective would provide useful insights to contribute to energize its development. This is a ...
متن کاملMaking HCI theory work: an analysis of the use of activity theory in HCI research
This paper reports a study of the use of activity theory in human–computer interaction (HCI) research. We analyse activity theory in HCI since its first appearance about 25 years ago. Through an analysis and meta-synthesis of 109 selected HCI activity theory papers, we created a taxonomy of 5 different ways of using activity theory: (1) analysing unique features, principles, and problematic asp...
